Pre-Med I want to go to medical school… There is no doubt about it…getting into medical school is a challenge! Most medical schools state that it is beneficial for students to major in the academic area most interesting to him or her. Pre-med students, however, frequently choose to major in biology or chemistry courses because of the required sciences courses. Admission to medical school usually include two years of biology, general and organic chemistry, one year of physics, English and in some cases, calculus and behavioral sciences. In order to be considered as a candidate for medical school, the student must prepare and do well on the MCAT: Medical College Admission Test. This test is broken down into four sections: Physical Sciences, Verbal Reasoning, Biology Sciences and a writing assessment. The MCAT is scored in the following way: the Verbal Reasoning, Physical Sciences and Biological Sciences sections are scored with a numerical scale ranging from a 1 to 15. Scores for the writing sample are scored on an alphabetical scale ranging from a J to a T. Then a total score is reported (the sum of the numeric and alpha scores, i.e. 30S). You can access further information about this at: www.aaamc.org/mcat. The test is given only twice a year: April and August. It is suggested that students take this test at least 18 months prior to their possible entrance into medical school. In other words, you need to start preparing right away! 3PR can help you achieve your dream of going to medical school. We provide you with the skills and tools you need to succeed. But, we cannot, of course, guarantee admission into medical school. However, we are proud to that many of our graduates have accomplished their dream and gained admission to UT Southwestern Medical School, Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, Texas A&M Medical Branch, UT-San Antonio Medical Branch, UT Medical Branch (Galveston), pharmacy programs (UT-Austin) and physician assistant programs (UT-Southwestern, Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine). 3PR provides you also with the benefit of a Health Professions Advisory Committee (HPAC): this committee is made up of two sciences professors and one non-science professor of your choice. This committee interviews you and the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and the Director of 3PR then writes a recommendation letter on your behalf to the medical schools to which you have applied. Pre-Dent I want to be a dentist... Pre-dental students have a definite advantage when choosing to study at Texas Wesleyan University because of our relationship with the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. We offer the 3+4 dual-degree program – the only school in North Texas to do so! This program allows pre-dental students (who have between 12 and 30 college hours only) to gain “conditional” early admittance into the dental program in San Antonio. Students at Texas Wesleyan University apply credits earned during their dental school to college requirements and receive two degrees in seven years. This saves the student one year’s worth of work. A minimum GPA of 3.4 is required. You can access further information about this exciting program at: http://dental.uthscsa.edu/admissions/dds_dual.html Our dental students also receive all the benefits of 3PR, including one on one academic advising, mock interviews, the DAT preparation book, and the HPAC recommendation letter. |
