New Student Orientation is an opportunity for new and transfer students to become familiar with Texas Wesleyan University's academic programs, facilities, and various services available on campus.

Students who are new to Wesleyan should make every effort to attend one of the on-campus orientation sessions. Topics covered include accessing Ramlink (Wesleyan's official communication to students), tuition and fees, access to math and English tutors, career services, library services and much more. Students are advised and registered during the orientation session, so keep it simple and take advantage of one stop advising, registration, and information sessions during orientation.

If you were asked to take a placement exam, sign up for one below. We ask also that you sign up for a placement at least one week before your orientation.

Placement Testing

In order to ensure students are placed in the appropriate college level courses, Texas Wesleyan offers placement testing in math, English, and reading. We use Accuplacer, a computer generated test for our placement testing needs.

All students who have not earned college credit for ENG 1301 are required to take the English Placement Exam. The exam focuses on a student's writing proficiency.

Students without college algebra or its equivalent are required to take the Math Placement Exam. Freshman students who have a Math SAT score of 600 or above or Math ACT score of 28 or above take the Mathematics Placement Examination---Precalculus Form.

All freshman students with an SAT verbal below 530, or the equivalent ACT score, must take the Reading Placement Exam. Students who transfer in with 31 hours or more or with a verbal SAT score of 530 or above or the quivalent ACT score are exempt from taking the exam.

Spanish Placement Testing

Spanish Placement Testing is now conducted through the language department. For information, contact Dr. Amy Bell, Associate Professor of Spanish, at 817-531-4932 or abell@txwes.edu, or Dr. Price McMurray, Chair of the Department of English at 817-531- 4905 or pmcmurray@txwes.edu.

Transfer Student Services

New Student Transfer Orientation– An opportunity for transfer students to become familiar with Texas Wesleyan University's academic programs, facilities, and various services available on campus.

Mentorship – One-on-one relationship building and guidance from volunteer faculty, staff, and upperclassmen mentors, to insure that incoming transfer students make a smooth transition from their previous institution.

Transfer Student Advisory Board (TSAB) - The mission of the TSAB is to serve as advocates for transfer students at Texas Wesleyan University and to form relationships with others. It is our hope that members of the TSAB can provide feedback, suggestions and assistance in recruiting, welcoming and supporting students as they transition into their new role as successful members of the Texas Wesleyan community!

Networking – New Student Programs now has a Facebook page where transfer students can connect and network.

Transfer Events -Through out the semester, New Students Programs organizes events specifically for transfer students. Events include such things as “Meet and Greets” and “Swag Swaps.

Advising Needs - Each semester, transfer students are given the opportunity to meet one-on-one with their individual advisor to prepare for a new semester of course work. For assistance contacting an advisor, please contact New Student Programs.

Transfer Series Newsletters - Each semester a transfer newsletter is sent to all transfer students. These newsletters include up to date information on campus happenings and important academic dates.

Tutoring
Although career opportunities for English majors are varied and numerous, primarily because majors can think critically, write well and speak clearly, the following brief list describes some of those opportunities. The job descriptions come from the US Department of Labor; for more details, check out that web site: Occupational Outlook Handbook. Keep in mind that some of these positions also require graduate degrees, but your English degree will prepare you well for graduate work.

Mentorship Program

The purpose of the mentorship program is to introduce students to mentors from our faculty, staff, and upperclassmen with similar interests and attain compatible matches. These matches meet during the semester for lunch, dinner, sports events, and more! The Mentorship Program is available for freshmen and transfer students.

The New Student Mentorship Program is beginning its matching process for the 2011 fall semester. If you would like to participate, come by the Academic Success Center, read over and fill out the questionnaire, or click on the appropriate link below.
