Distinguished Alumni Award

Dr. Ray Lewis BS '80

Awarded to a Texas Wesleyan graduate whose achievements have distinguished him or her in a broad (national or international) sense.

Ray Lewis graduated from Texas Wesleyan in 1980 with a bachelor’s degree in environmental biology. After a two-year graduate science study in molecular biology at Prairie View A&M University, he earned a doctorate in osteopathic medicine from the University of North Texas Health Science
Center.

Lewis has been involved in the Fort Worth medical field for many years. He owned and worked as a family physician at the East Fort Worth Medical Clinic from 1988 though 1995. He later worked as a clinical instructor at the University of North Texas Health Science Center. Lewis has certification in family practice with the American Osteopathic Association and certification in long term care (LTC) as medical director with the American Medical Directors Association. He is currently a geriatric care specialist, has contracts with 25 nursing facilities and serves as medical director for 17 nursing homes.

He is a leader in the community, serving on the Texas Wesleyan University alumni board and as chair of the Professional Liability Insurance Committee and the Post Graduate Education Committee in the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association. He is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Stop Six Community Services and the Texas Medical Directors Association. Lewis and his wife, Glenda, work with the career programs at Texas Wesleyan to find career placements for students seeking internships.

Lewis was named one of America’s Top Doctors in Geriatrics Medicine by
the Consumer’s Research Council of America, and was recognized by the
Fort Worth Business Press as a 2002 Healthcare Hero, an achievement
award in medical and professional services. He is very active as a state-appointed member of the Texas Council on Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders, and serves on the board of directors of the Texas Medical Directors Association. He received a Congressional Appreciation Award from Texas State Senator Jane Nelson.

He and Glenda have twin daughters, Alpha and Risa, both students at Texas Wesleyan.
