FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team (5-3, 3-0) took a 4-2 win over Texas College (2-2, 1-2) at Martin Field on Friday.
The Rams controlled the first half and out shot the Steers 11-1. Texas Wesleyan broke through with a goal from Christian Villasenor in the 23rd minute. Two minutes later Jason Reid’s header off a corner kick from Seth Mullins found the back of the net and gave the Rams a 2-0 lead.
Texas Wesleyan pushed their lead to 3-0 with a goal from Jose Melendez just over four minutes into the second half. The Rams would need that cushion as the Steers took an 18-4 margin on shots in the second half. Eduardo Alvarez got Texas College on the board with 22 minutes remaining, but Villasenor answered with his second goal with 13 minutes on the clock. The Steers added a goal from Daniel Pedroza on a free kick, but would get no closer.
Villasenor’s two goals led the Rams’ offense while Reid added a goal and an assist.
“They are a hard working team,” said Head Coach Steve Jones. “We did not take advantage of a couple of scoring chances that could have put the game away.”
The Rams will return to action when they travel to Muskogee, OK, to take on Bacone College in Red River Athletic Conference action. That game is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. and will be preceded by women’s match.
