FORT
WORTH, Texas - Sophomore Mark Puente scored with 30 seconds remaining to lift
Texas Wesleyan past SW Assemblies of God, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Martin Field.
SW
Assemblies of God (1-1) opened the scoring in the eighth minute when Erick Stocchero
scored on a breakaway, beating Ram goalkeeper Thomas Hansen on a one-on-one.
Texas
Wesleyan answered the goal in the 25th minute, when junior Jose Melendez scored,
getting an assist from both freshman Jack Walker and junior Rene Mercado to knot
the score, 1-1.
The Rams continued to pour
shot upon shot at the goal but were never able to finish, until Puente took a
pass from Mercado with the clock winding down. The midfielder got past the defenders
and beat Lion goalkeeper Wodrow Clayton for his first goal of the season.
"We
applied pressure to the other team all day," head coach Steve Jones said.
"We had many opportunities that we didn't cash in, but, hopefully, with this
victory, we can ride the confidence on to the next match."
The
Rams outshot the Lions, 19-3, and sent nine shots in on goal. For Texas Wesleyan
the victory broke a four-game winless streak that dated back to last season.
Texas
Wesleyan returns to action Friday when they host conference-rival Huston-Tillotson
at Martin Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
