FORT WORTH, Texas - Texas Wesleyan
scored five second-half goals to defeat Red River conference rival
Huston-Tillotson, 6-0, Friday afternoon at Martin Field.
Texas Wesleyan (2-2-1, 2-0 RRAC) opened
the scoring in the 15th minute when junior Rene Mercado dribbled
through the entire Tillotson defense and launched a shot past goalkeeper
Armando Ontiveras to put the Rams ahead, 1-0.
In the second half, Texas Wesleyan began
to pour it on. Juniors Jose Melendez and Travis Mauldin both scored,
along with freshman Ekene Onuoha and sophomore Mark Puente. Mercado
also added his second goal of the match in the 76th minute.
Picking up assists for Texas Wesleyan were
junior Chase Stephens, freshmen Paul Brenke and Jack Walker, along
with Melendez and Puente.
Huston-Tillotson (0-4-2) never could get
anything going as the Rams outshot them, 26-3. It was also a very
physical game as both teams combined for 30 fouls.
Texas Wesleyan returns to action Saturday
when they travel to take on Sooner Conference member John Brown.
Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
