     CHICKASHA, Okla.
- The Texas Wesleyan men and women's soccer teams both defeated St. Gregory's on Friday afternoon on the opening day of the USAO Classic. The Rams upended the Cavaliers, 2-0, while the Lady Rams held off the Lady Cavaliers, 2-1.

The Rams (3-4-1) received goals from juniors Travis Mauldin and Nathan Mutchler, while junior Rene Mercado picked up two assists and junior Ricky Gallardo registered one assist.

Sophomore goalkeeper Thomas Hansen tallied his second shutout of the season.

"The boys started off strong, but then hit a wall after the first five minutes," head coach Steve Jones said. "The upperclassmen stepped up today and produced a good result for the team. This was a confidence builder going into tomorrow's tough matchup with USAO."

The Lady Rams (4-3-1) started slow but scored in both halves. Junior Jessica Carrion and sophomore Nichole Richardson scored the two goals, with sophomore Melody Overland and Richardson picking up the assists.

Ahead 2-0, in the second half, Texas Wesleyan gave up a penalty kick, but junior goalkeeper Jennifer Arellano was there to stop it and preserve the victory.

"We kept the other team in the game," Jones said. "Our defense came up huge when we need them to."

Both teams will take on tournament host, Science and Arts of Oklahoma. The women kickoff at 3 p.m., with the men to follow at 5 p.m.
