LAREDO, Texas - The Texas Wesleyan
soccer team split a doubleheader with Texas A&M-International,
Friday afternoon in Red River Athletic Conference action. The Lady
Rams defeated the Lady Dustdevils, 2-1, while the men's squad fell
to the Dustdevils, 6-1.
The Lady Rams (5-4-1, 1-0 RRAC) received
two goals from sophomore Nichole Richardson, with assists coming
from sophomore Rose Fernandez and junior Leslie Tabor. Richardson's
second goal came in the 76th minute for the one-goal victory.
"We did just enough to win the game,"
head coach Steve Jones said. "We are banged up right now, so
it was good that we started conference-play with a victory."
On the men's side, the Rams (3-6-1, 2-1
RRAC) gave up three first-half goals to TAMU-International. The
Dustdevils went ahead 5-0, before Wesleyan got on the board in the
70th minute. Junior Jose Melendez scored on an assist from junior
Miljan Pandurevic. The Dustdevils added a goal in the 86th minute
to cap off the scoring at 6-1.
"We continue to give up early goals
and you just can't keep doing that and expect to win," Jones
said. "We are mentally weak right now and are searching for
some confidence."
Texas Wesleyan returns to action Wednesday
when the Lady Rams travel to take on East Texas Baptist. Kickoff
is set for 1:30 p.m. The Rams will also be back in action Wednesday
when they travel to take on conference-rival Wiley College at 4
