FORT WORTH, Texas - Texas Wesleyan
rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat conference-leader Northwood, 3-2, Wednesday
afternoon at Martin Field.
With
over 200 fans in attendance, which is the largest to see a Texas Wesleyan soccer
game in over three years, Texas Wesleyan (7-8-1, 6-2 RRAC) rallied to a 1-0 lead
on a goal from sophomore Damien McBrien off of a cornerkick in the 29th minute.
Junior Rene Mercado got the assist on McBrien's first career goal.
Northwood
(9-4, 6-1 RRAC) got back into the match with goals from Christyan Crespo and an
own goal by the Rams to silence the crowd.
The
Rams wouldn't quit, as junior Travis Mauldin took a pass from sophomore Ryan Landers
and banged one in off of the post to knot the score, 2-2, in the 64th minute.
In
the 66th minute, junior Ricky Gallardo knock one past the Knight goalkeeper from
20 yards out to give the Rams the lead and send the crowd into a frenzy. Junior
Jose Melendez assisted on the eventual game-winner.
Texas
Wesleyan outshot the Knights, 10-8, and had eight shots on goal.
Texas
Wesleyan returns to action Friday in the semifinals of the Red River Conference
Tournament. The time, site and opponent have not yet been determined. This is
the second straight season the Rams have qualified for the postseason.
