October 27, 2004

Box Score

FORT WORTH, Texas - Texas Wesleyan rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat conference-leader Northwood, 3-2, Wednesday afternoon at Martin Field.

With over 200 fans in attendance, which is the largest to see a Texas Wesleyan soccer game in over three years, Texas Wesleyan (7-8-1, 6-2 RRAC) rallied to a 1-0 lead on a goal from sophomore Damien McBrien off of a cornerkick in the 29th minute. Junior Rene Mercado got the assist on McBrien's first career goal.

Northwood (9-4, 6-1 RRAC) got back into the match with goals from Christyan Crespo and an own goal by the Rams to silence the crowd.

The Rams wouldn't quit, as junior Travis Mauldin took a pass from sophomore Ryan Landers and banged one in off of the post to knot the score, 2-2, in the 64th minute.

In the 66th minute, junior Ricky Gallardo knock one past the Knight goalkeeper from 20 yards out to give the Rams the lead and send the crowd into a frenzy. Junior Jose Melendez assisted on the eventual game-winner.

Texas Wesleyan outshot the Knights, 10-8, and had eight shots on goal.

Texas Wesleyan returns to action Friday in the semifinals of the Red River Conference Tournament. The time, site and opponent have not yet been determined. This is the second straight season the Rams have qualified for the postseason.
