November 16, 2004

     FORT WORTH, Texas -
Five players from the Texas Wesleyan volleyball team were named to the 2004 Red River Athletic Conference team this week.

Texas Wesleyan, who was crowned conference champions on Saturday afternoon, placed seniors Cortney Johansen and Tiffany Porterfield, along with junior Rachel Loftin, on the first team; senior Nicky Davis on the second team and junior Susan Taylor was named honorable mention. Johansen was also named conference setter of the year.

Johansen led the conference in assists, dishing out 11.45 assists a game. The Colleyville, Texas native, also became Texas Wesleyan's all-time career assist leader, breaking Cassie Underwood's record of 4,605. The senior currently has 5,365 assists after the conference tournament on Saturday.

Porterfield and Loftin both were among the conference leaders in kills and blocks per game. Loftin was ranked second in kills per game (3.65) and first in blocks (1.56). Porterfield ranked fourth in kill percentage (.363) and finished tied for seventh in kills per game (2.95). Davis was fifth in hitting percentage (.355), while Taylor led the conference in digs per game (5.55).

The Lady Rams will be back in action Friday when they travel to take part in the 2004 NAIA Region VI Tournament in Odessa. UT-Permian Basin is this year's host school. Texas Wesleyan will open up in the quarterfinal round against a familiar foe, College of the Southwest. First-serve is set for 11 a.m. Texas Wesleyan split with the Lady Mustangs during the regular season, with each team winning on its home floor. The winner of that match will move on to face Houston Baptist in the semifinals at 5 p.m. The championship match is set for Saturday at 11 a.m.
