FORT WORTH, Texas - Five players
from the Texas Wesleyan volleyball team were named to the 2004 Red
River Athletic Conference team this week.
Texas Wesleyan, who was crowned conference
champions on Saturday afternoon, placed seniors Cortney Johansen
and Tiffany Porterfield, along with junior Rachel Loftin, on the
first team; senior Nicky Davis on the second team and junior Susan
Taylor was named honorable mention. Johansen was also named conference
setter of the year.
Johansen led the conference in assists,
dishing out 11.45 assists a game. The Colleyville, Texas native,
also became Texas Wesleyan's all-time career assist leader, breaking
Cassie Underwood's record of 4,605. The senior currently has 5,365
assists after the conference tournament on Saturday.
Porterfield and Loftin both were among
the conference leaders in kills and blocks per game. Loftin was
ranked second in kills per game (3.65) and first in blocks (1.56).
Porterfield ranked fourth in kill percentage (.363) and finished
tied for seventh in kills per game (2.95). Davis was fifth in hitting
percentage (.355), while Taylor led the conference in digs per game
(5.55).
The Lady Rams will be back in action Friday
when they travel to take part in the 2004 NAIA Region VI Tournament
in Odessa. UT-Permian Basin is this year's host school. Texas Wesleyan
will open up in the quarterfinal round against a familiar foe, College
of the Southwest. First-serve is set for 11 a.m. Texas Wesleyan
split with the Lady Mustangs during the regular season, with each
team winning on its home floor. The winner of that match will move
on to face Houston Baptist in the semifinals at 5 p.m. The championship
match is set for Saturday at 11 a.m.
