Lady Rams defeat Houston Baptist again, reach regional final
November 19, 2004

ODESSA, Texas - Texas Wesleyan proved that last weekend was no fluke as they knocked off No. 11 Houston Baptist again. The Lady Rams defeated Houston Baptist, 3-0, Friday evening in the semifinals of the NAIA Region VI Tournament.

Texas Wesleyan (33-3) defeated the nationally ranked Lady Huskies for the second straight time in seven days, 30-25, 30-12, 30-26.

Senior Tiffany Porterfield led the Lady Rams with 10 kills, while senior Cortney Johansen dished out 40 assists. Junior Susan Taylor led Texas Wesleyan with 25 digs, while seniors Kat Williams and Becca Broussard had 19 digs and 17 digs respectively.

In the morning match, Texas Wesleyan defeated College of the Southwest for the second time this season, 29-31, 30-21, 30-28, 30-18.

"I think having to play the extra match helped us," head coach Rick Johansen said. "We got all of our jitters out in the match and were really focused in the evening match. We were very business-like and played hard every point."

Porterfield, again, led the Lady Rams with 23 kills, while junior Rachel Loftin added 16 kills. Johansen also had another outstanding match, dishing out 56 assists. Porterfield registered 13 blocks, while senior Nicky Davis added 12 blocks. Taylor led the Lady Rams once again with 21 digs.

Texas Wesleyan advances to the championship match of the NAIA Region VI Tournament Saturday in Odessa. Texas Wesleyan faces a familiar foe in Lubbock Christian. First-serve is set for 11 a.m.
