Texas - Texas Wesleyan proved that last weekend was no fluke as they knocked
off No. 11 Houston Baptist again. The Lady Rams defeated Houston Baptist, 3-0,
Friday evening in the semifinals of the NAIA Region VI Tournament.
Texas
Wesleyan (33-3) defeated the nationally ranked Lady Huskies for the second straight
time in seven days, 30-25, 30-12, 30-26.
Senior
Tiffany Porterfield led the Lady Rams with 10 kills, while senior Cortney Johansen
dished out 40 assists. Junior Susan Taylor led Texas Wesleyan with 25 digs, while
seniors Kat Williams and Becca Broussard had 19 digs and 17 digs respectively.
In
the morning match, Texas Wesleyan defeated College of the Southwest for the second
time this season, 29-31, 30-21, 30-28, 30-18.
"I
think having to play the extra match helped us," head coach Rick Johansen
said. "We got all of our jitters out in the match and were really focused
in the evening match. We were very business-like and played hard every point."
Porterfield,
again, led the Lady Rams with 23 kills, while junior Rachel Loftin added 16 kills.
Johansen also had another outstanding match, dishing out 56 assists. Porterfield
registered 13 blocks, while senior Nicky Davis added 12 blocks. Taylor led the
Lady Rams once again with 21 digs.
Texas
Wesleyan advances to the championship match of the NAIA Region VI Tournament Saturday
in Odessa. Texas Wesleyan faces a familiar foe in Lubbock Christian. First-serve
is set for 11 a.m.
