TYLER, Texas - Junior Britney
Helton came off the bench to score 17 points and lead Texas Wesleyan
to a 68-67 victory over UT-Tyler Saturday evening at the Howard
Patterson Center.
Texas Wesleyan (1-2) held a nine-point
lead with 2:20 remaining in the game, but UT-Tyler came on strong,
but a bit short as they could only cut the lead to one point.
UT-Tyler (0-1) opened the game on a 15-6
run to take a nine-point lead with 14:23 left in the first half.
Sarah Stanley hit two treys during the span.
The Lady Rams finished the final 14 minutes
of the first half on a 33-17 run where senior Shayla Coleman scored
the last six points for the visitors. Texas Wesleyan led at the
half, 39-32, as Helton had 11 of her 17 points to lead the way.
In the second half, Texas Wesleyan stretched
its lead to as many as 10 points, but the Lady Patriots stayed in
the game and made it close down the stretch.
Senior Johnna Flemmons scored 13 points
and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds, while senior Kashae Townsend
added 10 points and seven rebounds.
It was a sloppy game as Wesleyan committed
31 turnovers and UT-Tyler had 27. The Lady Rams held the rebounding
margin, 35-24, which included 13 offensive rebounds.
Texas Wesleyan shot 42 percent (23-55)
from the floor and 44 percent (4-9) from behind the arc. The Lady
Rams also shot 69 percent (18-26) from the free-throw line.
UT-Tyler shot 46 percent (26-57) from the
field and 67 percent from the three-point line. The Lady Patriots
also shot 64 percent (9-14) from the charity stripe.
Texas Wesleyan will be back in action Tuesday
when they when they host Oklahoma Christian at the Sid Richardson
Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. Oklahoma Christian already
beat the Lady Rams, 88-63, on Nov. 9th in Edmond, Okla.
