FORT WORTH, Texas - The Lady Rams
dropped to 1-3 on the season after an 88-80 loss to the undefeated
Lady Eagles of Oklahoma Christian Tuesday evening at the Sid Richardson
Gymnasium.
Junior forward Kashae Townsend dropped
19 points and gathered a game-high 17 rebounds to lead the Lady
Rams in both categories. Her effort was overshadowed by five Lady
Eagles scoring in double-digits. Oklahoma Christian guard Lauren
Decker registered a game-high 24 points on 50 percent shooting to
lead the Lady Eagles offensively.
The Lady Eagles (7-0) began the game on
a 9-0 run through the first two minutes of the contest. OCU played
behind the strength of a team lights-out shooting performance in
the first half, in which they knocked down 41 percent of their shots
from the field, including 66 percent from beyond the arc.
Despite shooting only 36 percent and committing
13 turnovers in the first frame, the Lady Rams closed their deficit
to only six points at the half, 39-33, on the back of a 6-0 run
in last three minutes.
While the Lady Rams' overall shooting performance
from the floor improved in the second half, their three-point shooting
was unfruitful as the team went 0-7 for the half. The Lady Rams
did step up their defensive effort as they forced the Lady Eagles
into 10 turnovers in the second half. Wesleyan then erased their
deficit on a Townsend lay-in with 13:22 remaining that made the
count 51-50 in favor of the Lady Rams.
A lay-up by OCU forward Carlissa Plowden
three minutes later, however, would put the Lady Rams down for the
rest of the game, as the Lady Eagles only continued to heat up.
The Lady Eagles connected on 60 percent of their attempts from the
floor, including a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc in the second
half.
Plowden led the Lady Eagles in the second
frame with 15 points. OCU shot 50 percent on the night, including
77 percent from behind the three-point line. Forward Tasha Turney
scored 12 and grabbed 10 boards. Forward Katie Fariss shot 5-for-6
from the three-point line, scoring 17 points and pulling down 10
rebounds. Rachel Martin chipped in with 12 points for the Lady Eagles.
The Lady Rams shot a dismal 41.9 percent
from the field, including 16.7 percent from the three-point line
for the game. Forward Nastassia Brown registered 12 points and five
boards in only 16 minutes for the Lady Rams. Sophomore forward Shawndrika
Courtney scored 11 points and added seven rebounds before fouling
out with just less than four and a half minutes remaining. Junior
guard Tiffany Hill had game-highs of five assists and three steals.
The Lady Rams return to action Friday when
they travel to take on St. Gregory's in the OBU Classic in Shawnee,
Okla. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. They will take on host Oklahoma
Baptist Saturday at 6 p.m.
