FORT WORTH, Texas - The Lady Rams
improved their conference record to 3-1 with an 88-68 victory over
the Lady Warriors of Bacone College Monday evening at the Sid Richardson
Gymnasium behind the on-point shooting performances of senior guards
Shayla Coleman and Johnna Flemmons.
The Lady Rams opened the scoring with
two quick buckets by senior forward Kashae Townsend and Flemmons.
Bacone would answer back with two consecutive buckets of their own
to tie the score at 4-4 three minutes into the contest. This would
be the closest the Lady Warriors would get to a lead all night,
as the Lady Rams began their offensive onslaught with a 13-2 run
over the next six minutes.
Leading the Lady Rams in the first
half was Flemmons, who knocked down three of her four attempts from
behind the arc for 11 points. Coleman was also a major contributor,
as she went 3-of-6 from the field for nine points. The Lady Rams
shot a fiery 46.9 percent from the floor, including 40 percent from
beyond the three-point line, to take a 39-27 lead at half time.
To begin the second period, the Lady
Rams picked up the action where they left off, as they sped out
on a 16-5 run in the first six minutes. Coleman scored eight points
in the span. The Lady Rams only continued to heat up from the floor,
as they connected on 62.1 percent of their attempts in the second
half. Coleman scored 11 of her game-high 20 points in the second
half. Junior forward Shawndrika Courtney also led the way in the
second half with 10 of her 13 points coming in the half. Their defensive
effort picked up, as well. The Lady Warriors were forced into 12
of their 23 total turnovers in the second frame.
Bacone improved their shooting to 50 percent
from the field in the second half on the perfect 4-for-4 performance
by junior guard Amber Wagoner and 3-for-6 effort by senior forward
Melissa Marberry. Both Lady Warriors notched nine points in the
half.
Marberry finished with 16 points to lead
the Lady Warriors offensively. Junior guard Dawn Morton scored 14
points and had seven assists. Wagoner registered 11 points on the
night. For the game, the Lady Warriors shot a dismal 42.1 percent
from the floor, including 30.4 percent from behind the arc.
Flemmons helped lead the Lady Rams, as
she finished the night shooting 70 percent from the floor, including
3-of-5 from behind the arc, and tallied 17 points. Sophomore forward
Nastassia Brown notched 12 points. Junior guard Tiffany Hill helped
with a game-high eight assists, and Townsend pulled down a game-high
eight rebounds. The Lady Rams were successful on 54.1 percent of
their attempts, including 42.9 percent from behind the three-point
line.
The Lady Rams return to action Wednesday
when they travel to Laredo to take on Texas A&M-International
at 1 p.m.
