LAREDO,
Texas - Sophomore Nastassia Brown tallied 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead
Texas Wesleyan past Texas A&M-International, 72-56, Wednesday afternoon at
the TAMIU Kiniesiology and Convocation Building.
Texas
Wesleyan (6-5, 4-1) jumped out to a 14-8 lead with 12:38 remaining in the first
half. Junior Shawndrika Courtney had the hot hand connecting on five points during
the stretch. They also forced the Lady Dustdevils into six turnovers.
TAMU-International
(3-5, 2-3 RRAC) fought back to tie the score, 19-19, using an 11-5 run over the
next five minutes. Jermina Tomlinson led the Lady Dustdevils canning three buckets
along the way.
The Lady Rams took a 33-28
lead at the break on the strength of 11 points from Brown. The Fort Worth, Texas
native went 4-of-6 from the field and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe. Texas Wesleyan
also received nine points and six rebounds off the bench from junior Shawndrika
Courtney.
In the second half, the two teams
traded points, with the Lady Rams keeping its three-point lead with 14:17 remaining,
41-38.
Then Texas Wesleyan broke the game
open, going on a 27-10 run over the next 10 minutes to take a 68-48 lead with
4:33 left in the contest. Brown and Courtney were at it again scoring six points
a piece during the span.
Texas Wesleyan shot
35 percent (27-77) from the field and 74 percent (17-23) from the free-throw line.
The Lady Rams also shot 20 percent (1-5) from behind the arc.
TAMU-International
shot 30 percent (22-74) from the field and 67 percent (12-18) from the free-throw
line. The Lady Dustdevils also shot a dismal zero percent (0-24) from the three-point
line.
Texas Wesleyan will take its annual
Christmas Break before its matchup against Avila University on December 29th.
The Lady Rams will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. at the Sid Richardson Gymnasium.
