FORT WORTH, Texas - Junior Shawndrika
Courtney scored 23 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead Texas
Wesleyan to a 71-63 victory over Avila Wednesday evening at the
Sid Richardson Gymnasium.
Texas Wesleyan (7-5) started the game on
a 10-0 run in the first three minutes of game. Junior Britney Helton
had five points during the stretch, while Courtney added four during
the span.
The Lady Rams increased its lead to as
many as 19 points in the first period and took a 39-23 lead into
the break. Courtney totaled 13 points and seven rebounds in the
first half.
In the second half, the Lady Rams increased
its lead to 51-31 with 15:06 remaining in the contest. Courtney
again led the way scoring seven points during the stretch.
Avila (7-9) fought back, cutting the lead
to 62-58, with 2:59 remaining in the game. The two teams traded
baskets back and forth, before Wesleyan pulled away with two big
shots from sophomore Lacie Curry.
Senior Shayla Coleman registered 13 points
five rebounds and four assists, while junior Britney Helton added
10 points and three steals for the Lady Rams.
Texas Wesleyan shot 45 percent (25-56)
from the field and 78 percent (18-23) from the charity stripe. The
Lady Rams also shot 19 percent (3-16) from behind the arc.
Avila shot 41 percent (25-61) from the
floor and 48 percent (9-19) from the free-throw line. The Eagles
were also 25 percent (4-16) from the three-point line.
The Lady Rams outrebounded Avila, 41-35,
and pulled down 13 offensive rebounds.
Texas Wesleyan will be back in action Friday
when they host Hardin Simmons. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. at the
Sid Richardson Gymnasium.
