FORT WORTH, Texas - The Texas
Wesleyan women's basketball team tied a school record with 22 steals
and had its highest scoring output of the season in its 92-59 victory
over UT-Permian Basin Sunday afternoon in Red River Athletic Conference
action.
Texas Wesleyan (11-6, 8-1 RRAC) played
even with the Falcons for the first six minutes, taking a 8-7 lead
with 14:08 remaining in the first half. The Lady Rams then turned
up the heat, registering 11 steals until the break to go on a 37-14
run. Senior Kashae Townsend led the Lady Rams with eight first-half
points. Eleven different players scored at least two points in the
first half. They also forced 17 Lady Falcon turnovers before the
break.
UT-Permian Basin (12-8, 7-3 RRAC) shot
a dismal 27 percent from the field in the first half. The only thing
that gave the Lady Falcons any kind of offense was their 8-of-9
free-throw shooting.
In the second half, the Lady Rams increased
their lead to as many as 35 points when they went ahead, 72-37,
with 10:41 remaining. The Lady Rams kept the pressure on forcing
15 second-half turnovers.
Texas Wesleyan had four players in double
figures, led by juniors Shawndrika Courtney and Kori Yates who both
had 13 points. Townsend added 12 points, while senior Johnna Flemmons
chipped in with 11 points.
The Lady Rams outrebounded UT-Permian Basin,
41-34, and dished out 21 team assists.
Texas Wesleyan shot 49 percent (35-71)
from the floor and 69 percent (18-26) from the charity stripe. The
Lady Rams also shot 36 percent (4-11) from the three-point line.
UT-Permian Basin shot 28 percent (13-46)
from the field and 88 percent (28-32) from the free-throw line.
The Lady Falcons also shot 29 percent (5-17) from behind the arc.
Texas Wesleyan will be back in action Saturday,
when they travel to take on conference-leader Houston Baptist. Tip-off
is set for 5:30 p.m. at Sharp Gymnasium. Houston Baptist won both
contests last season.
