HOUSTON,
Texas - Junior Tiffany Hill scored a team-high 14 points and dished out four
assists, but that was not enough as Texas Wesleyan fell to No. 3 Houston Baptist,
88-61, Saturday evening at Sharp Gymnasium in Red River Athletic Conference action.
Texas
Wesleyan (11-7, 8-2 RRAC) took an early 8-7 lead at the 16:02 mark. Sophomore
Nastassia Brown scored two buckets during the stretch.
Over
the next four minutes, the Lady Rams went south, only making one bucket during
the span. The Lady Huskies built a 17-10 lead at the 12:13 mark of the first half.
Houston
Baptist (18-2, 10-0 RRAC) then went on a 33-18 run to end the first period and
take a 50-28 lead over the visiting Lady Rams. Arie Wilson led all scorers in
the first half with 11 points In the second
half, the Lady Rams came out hot, outscoring Houston Baptist, 13-3 in the first
five minutes to cut the lead to 12, with 15:01 remaining in the contest. Junior
Britney Helton led the way with five points, while fellow junior Tiffany Hill
added four points that keyed the run.
The
home team took the momentum right back with a 17-6 run over the next eight minutes
to put the game out of reach.
Brown tallied
a double-double for the Lady Rams with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while senior
Kashae Townsend added 12 points and a team-high four steals. Helton also scored
in double-digits, registering 10 points off of the bench.
Wilson
led five Lady Huskies in double-digits with 19 points, while both Natasha Avey
and Anjelica DeVries both added 12 points.
Texas
Wesleyan shot 37 percent (23-62) from the floor and 56 percent (14-25) from the
charity stripe. The Lady Rams also shot 11 percent (1-9) from the three-point
line.
Houston Baptist shot 53 percent (32-60)
from the field and 59 percent (20-34) from the free-throw line. The Lady Huskies
also shot 40 percent (4-10) from behind the arc.
Texas
Wesleyan will be back in action Monday, when they travel to take on conference-rival
Huston-Tillotson. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. in Austin. Texas Wesleyan won both
contests last season, which included a 64-61-overtime victory in Austin.
