AUSTIN,
Texas - Senior Kashae Townsend tallied 15, points, five rebounds and two steals
to lead Texas Wesleyan to a 62-51 victory over Huston-Tillotson Monday evening
in Red River Athletic Conference action.
Huston-Tillotson
(4-13, 4-7 RRAC) jumped out to an early 11-4 lead at the 145:58 mark of the first
half. Huston-Tillotson forced the Lady Rams into five turnovers during the stretch.
Texas
Wesleyan (12-7, 9-2 RRAC) fought back with a 26-14 run to end the first half.
Junior Shanwdrika Courtney led Texas Wesleyan with eight points and six rebounds
in the first half.
In the second half, Texas
Wesleyan came out firing scoring the first five points to take a 10-point lead
at the 17:32 mark. The Lady Rams received buckets from sophomore Nastassia Brown
and senior Shayla Coleman to boost its lead.
Huston-Tillotson
answered with a 19-6 run over the next nine minutes to take a 44-41 lead with
8:56 remaining in the game.
At the four-minute
mark, Texas Wesleyan took over with the help of 10 points from Townsend. The Lady
Rams made 7-of-8 free throws in the waning minutes to close the game out.
Freshman
Stephanie Sewell poured in 11 points to go along with her eight rebounds and two
assists. Courtney finished the game with eight points, eight rebounds and a career-high
five blocked shots. Junior Stephanie Reder had a game-high four assists.
Ashley
Taylor led Huston-Tillotson with 13 points, while Candis Mosley added 10 points.
Texas
Wesleyan shot 37 percent (22-60) from the floor and 65 percent (17-26) from the
charity stripe. The Lady Rams also shot 14 percent (1-7) from the three-point
line.
Huston-Tillotson shot 30 percent (20-67)
from the field and 41 percent (7-17) from the free-throw line. The Lady Rams also
shot 27 percent (4-15) from behind the arc.
Texas
Wesleyan outrebounded Huston-Tillotson, 48-47, and forced them into 23 turnovers.
Texas
Wesleyan will be back in action Saturday, when they host conference-rival Wiley
College. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Sid Richardson Gymnasium. The Lady
Rams defeated the Lady Wildcats, 75-53, in Marshall Dec. 4 this season
