LANGSTON, Okla. - Sophomore Nastassia Brown
tallied 13 points and 11 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as Texas Wesleyan lost
to Langston, 67-55, Saturday evening in Red River Athletic Conference.
Langston
(10-12, 9-5 RRAC) jumped out to an early 14-5 lead at the 13:07 mark of the first
half. The Lady Lions received five points each from Kenyatta Releford and Imani
Miller.
Texas Wesleyan (14-8, 11-3 RRAC)
used a 19-12 run to end the half and cut the lead to two at the break. The Lady
Rams were led by sophomore Nastassia Brown who tallied five points and senior
Shayla Coleman who chipped in with four points during the last 13 minutes of the
first half.
Langston used a huge rebounding
advantage in the first half (30-20) to take control early, but the Lady Rams fought
back, collecting eight first-half steals.
Texas
Wesleyan scored the first five points of the second half to take a 29-26 lead
at the 18:19 mark.
The Lady Lions then went
on a 15-3 run over the next five minutes to take a 41-32 lead with 13:15 remaining
in the ballgame. Kimberly Braxton scored seven points during the run for the Langston.
Braxton
scored 10 more points down the stretch to keep Langston ahead. In the second half,
the Lady Rams had no answer for Braxton as she scored all 17 of her points in
the second frame.
Sophomore Lacie Curry scored
eight points and pulled down four rebounds for Texas Wesleyan, while junior Tiffany
Hill scored five points and picked up five steals.
Miller
scored 11 points and pulled down three rebounds for Langston, while Releford posted
nine points and seven rebounds.
Langston
outrebounded the Lady Rams, 46-42, and pulled down 19 offensive rebounds. Texas
Wesleyan turned the ball over 22 times, while Langston committed only 16 turnovers.
Texas
Wesleyan shot 30 percent (16-53) from the floor and 66 percent (19-29) from the
charity stripe. The Lady Rams also shot 44 percent (4-9) from the three-point
line.
Langston shot 38 percent (23-61) from
the field and 68 percent (19-28) from the free-throw line. The Lady Lions also
shot 29 percent (2-7) from behind the arc.
Texas
Wesleyan will be back in action Monday, when they continue its Oklahoma swing.
The Lady Rams will take on conference-rival Bacone College. Tip-off is set for
6 p.m. in Muskogee, Okla. The Lady Rams already defeated Bacone College once,
88-68, on Dec. 13th in Fort Worth. Texas Wesleyan remains in second place two
games ahead of both Langston and UT-Permian Basin, and three games back of Houston
