Score CROWLEY, Texas - Sophomore
catcher Amanda Milam crushed a two-run home run in the bottom of the tenth inning
to lead Texas Wesleyan to a doubleheader split versus #5 Science & Arts (Okla.)
Tuesday afternoon at Teeter Park. The Lady Rams took the opening game, 5-4, before
falling in the second game, 9-2.
"It
shows how hard these girls have worked and it is paying off," head coach
Shannon Gower said. "They never gave up in the first game and fought back.
This team is resilient in the fact that no lead is insurmountable."
In
the first game, Texas Wesleyan (2-1) got on the board in the second inning when
leftfielder Rachel Hampton singled home Milam who had reached with a leadoff single.
USAO
(4-3) fought back with two runs in the third inning when second baseman Crystal
Junkins tripled home pinch runner Jennifer Bridgeforth, before scoring herself
on a throwing error by Milam, to put the Lady Drovers ahead, 2-1.
USAO
added a run in the sixth inning when designated player Amanda Cotton reached base
with a two-out double and then scored on a single by left fielder Tanna Truelove
to make the score, 3-1.
The Lady Rams tied
the score with two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on an error
and another RBI-single by Hampton.
In extra
innings, the Lady Drovers pushed across a run in the top of the tenth inning,
before Milam's heroics in the bottom of the inning. Junior
Devin Blew (2-0) picked up the victory in relief for the Lady Rams, going six
innings and allowing just one earned run. Sophomore Rachel Lamont started the
game for Texas Wesleyan and pitched four strong innings allowing one unearned
run on four hits.
Milam finished game one,
going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI.
"Amanda
is a clutch hitter and has a lot of confidence in her swing," Gower said.
"She is having a fun time playing softball and that is a plus."
In
game two, the Lady Drovers jumped out early in the fourth inning on a three-run
home run by third baseman Nikki Aguilar.
Texas
Wesleyan battled back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning when they
scored an unearned run and first baseman Brooke McNabb singled home a run to cut
the lead to, 3-2.
USAO then blew open the
game scoring twice in the sixth inning and four unearned runs in the seventh inning
for the 9-2 victory.
Junior Marie Stone (0-1)
was saddled with the loss, allowing three earned runs on six hits, while striking
out four batters in six innings of work.
USAO's
Kindra Gregory had her stuff working, as she struck out 12 batters in her complete-game
victory.
Texas Wesleyan will be back in action
Friday and Saturday when it hosts Concordia (Texas) in identical doubleheaders
at 1 p.m.
