TYLER, Texas - Sophomore Lacie
Curry registered 13 points and 11 rebounds to lead Texas Wesleyan
to a 82-66 victory over Texas College Thursday evening in Red River
Athletic Conference action.
Texas Wesleyan (18-8, 15-3 RRAC) opened
the game on a 32-15 run, led by 11 points from senior Shayla Coleman.
The Lady Rams raced out to the 17-point lead with 9:57 remaining
in the first half.
Texas College (7-18, 6-12 RRAC) fought
back using a 20-10 run the rest of the half. Trena Alston led the
Lady Steers with 13 first-half points and eight points from Rebecca
Phipps.
In the second half, the Lady Rams increased
its lead to 50-39, with 15:24 remaining in the game. Junior Tiffani
Hill scored four points in the first five minutes of the half.
The Lady Steers then went on a 13-5 run
over the next five minutes. They were led by six points by Leslie
Burrell to cut the lead to 55-52.
Texas Wesleyan put the game away; by scoring
the next seven points to take a 62-52 lead with 9:12 remaining.
Nastassia Brown made a clutch three-point play.
Texas College made a go at it, using a
11-7 run over four minutes to cut the lead to 69-63, with 5:49 remaining
in the contest.
The Lady Rams closed the game out on a
13-3 run. They were led by Curry, who scored seven points in the
final run.
Coleman led the Lady Rams with 15 points,
canning three treys. Senior Kashae Townsend tallied 12 points and
six rebounds, while Hill added 11 points and seven assists.
Alston led the Lady Steers with 23 points
and five steals.
Texas Wesleyan shot 52 percent (33-64)
from the floor and 40 percent (4-10) from the charity stripe. The
Lady Rams also shot 67 percent (12-18) from the three-point line.
Texas College shot 40 percent (24-60) from
the field and 43 percent (12-28) from the free-throw line. The Lady
Steers also shot 40 percent (6-15) from behind the arc.
Texas Wesleyan will be back in action Monday,
when they travel take on conference-rival UT-Permian Basin. Tip-off
is set for 6 p.m. in Odessa, Texas. The Lady Rams already defeated
UT-Permian Basin once, 92-59, on Jan. 16th in Fort Worth. Texas
Wesleyan remains in second place three games back of Houston Baptist
for first place and two and half games ahead of third-place of the
