Lady Rams get defensive, defeat UT-Permian Basin, 75-48

The Texas Wesleyan women's basketball continued its five-game winning streak, defeating UT-Permian Basin, 75-48, Monday afternoon at the Falcon Dome.

     Texas Wesleyan (19-8, 16-3 RRAC) opened on a 10-4 run to start the game led by sophomore Lacie Curry and senior Kashae Townsend each scoring four points.

     The Lady Rams closed the half out on a 27-21 run to take a 37-25 lead at the break. Sophomores Nastassia Brown and Stephanie Sewell, along with Curry led the Lady Rams with six points in the first period. Texas Wesleyan forced the Lady Falcons into 17 first-half turnovers and registered 12 fast-break points.

     In the second half, Texas Wesleyan used a 12-4 run to take a 49-29 lead at the 14:52 mark of the second half. Senior Shayla Coleman scored seven straight points to end that run.

     UT-Permian Basin (17-11, 13-7 RRAC) could only get as close as 17 points as the Lady Rams forced them into 30 turnovers during the game.

     Texas Wesleyan outrebounded the Lady Falcons, 47-46, but the Lady Rams protected the ball, only committing a season-low 12 turnovers.

     Coleman led the Lady Rams with 15 points, while Brown chipped in with 13 points and eight rebounds.

     Codeye Pittman led the Lady Falcons with 10 points, while Kim Chaffin tallied nine points and 10 rebounds.

     Texas Wesleyan shot 43 percent (32-75) from the floor and 47 percent (9-19) from the charity stripe. The Lady Rams also shot 15 percent (2-13) from the three-point line.

     UT-Permian Basin shot 30 percent (14-47) from the field and 61 percent (19-31) from the free-throw line. The Lady Falcons also shot 14 percent (1-7) from behind the arc.

     Texas Wesleyan will be back in action Thursday, when they host conference-rival TAMU-International. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Sid Richardson Gymnasium. The Lady Rams already defeated the Lady Dustdevils once, 72-56, on Dec. 15th in Laredo. Texas Wesleyan remains in second place three games back of Houston Baptist for first place and xx and half games ahead of third-place of the Lady Falcons.
