Lady Rams pressured into 71-52 loss to #1 Houston Baptist

     FORT WORTH, Texas -
Texas Wesleyan put up a valiant effort but fell to top-ranked Houston Baptist, 71-52, Saturday evening in Red River Athletic action.

     Texas Wesleyan (20-9, 17-4 RRAC) opened the game on a 7-3 run, with sophomore Nastassia Brown leading the way. The Lady Rams forced Houston Baptist into three early turnovers during the stretch.

     Houston Baptist (29-2, 21-0 RRAC) fought back, using a 13-3 run over the next six minutes to take a 16-10 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. Valencia Kuykendall led the way for the Lady Huskies with six points during the run.

     The Lady Rams cut the lead to 27-24 at the break. Senior Kashae Townsend led the Wesleyan with seven points in the first frame. Both Dominique Thomas and Cari Scaff tallied eight points for Houston Baptist before intermission.

     In the second half, Houston Baptist increased its lead to 18 points, using a 20-5 run to open the half. The run gave the Lady Huskies a 47-29 lead with 14:33 left in the contest. Stephanie Stoglin came off the bench to score seven points to lead Houston Baptist.

     The Lady Rams got as close as 10 points down the stretch but the Lady Huskies had four players score in double figures and shot 54 percent in the second half. Houston Baptist also held Wesleyan to 39 percent shooting from the field in the second frame.

     Senior Shayla Coleman led the Lady Rams with 11 points while three players tallied five rebounds.

     Thomas led Houston Baptist with 17 points and Arie Wilson added 16 points, eight rebounds and four steals.

     Texas Wesleyan shot 35 percent (18-52) from the floor and 70 percent (14-20) from the charity stripe. The Lady Rams also shot 18 percent (2-11) from the three-point line.

     Houston Baptist shot 42 percent (21-50) from the field and 84 percent (26-31) from the free-throw line. The Lady Huskies also shot 19 percent (3-16) from behind the arc.

     Texas Wesleyan will be back in action Monday, when they host Huston-Tillotson in the regular-season finale. The game has been designated senior night and tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Sid Richardson Gymnasium. The Lady Rams defeated Huston-Tillotson once, 62-51, on Jan. 24th in Austin, Texas.
