FORT WORTH, Texas - Senior
Kashae Townsend tallied 15 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead Texas Wesleyan
past Huston-Tillotson, 85-82, Monday evening in the Red River Athletic Conference
finale. Senior Shayla Coleman added 13 points, which put her in Wesleyan's 1000-point
club.
Huston-Tillotson
(12-17, 12-10 RRAC) jumped out to an early 12-6 in the first four minutes of the
game. Texas Wesleyan turned the ball over five times during the stretch and Ashley
Taylor scored four points to lead Huston-Tillotson.
Tillotson
increased its lead 12 as Angie Carter scored six points to lead the way. Tillotson
held a 25-13 advantage with 11:26 left in the first half.
Texas
Wesleyan (21-9, 18-4 RRAC) fought back using a 29-14 run to end the half. Nastassia
Brown led the charge with 11 first-half points to give Wesleyan a 42-39 lead at
the break.
In the second half, Wesleyan opened
up a 53-48 lead with 15:15 remaining in the contest. Tillotson turned the ball
over four times during the first five minutes of the first half.
Tillotson
answered with a 15-8 run over the next six minutes led by four points by Candice
Mosley to retake the lead, 63-61.
The two
teams battled back and forth, trading baskets down the stretch. With the scored
tied at 81-81, with 1:49 remaining in the game Wesleyan took over. Senior Shayla
Coleman scored a bucket with 38 seconds remaining on a nice assist from LaRhonda
Hunter to put them up, 83-81. Sophomore Stephanie Sewell was fouled with 20 seconds
left. Sewell missed the first, but calmly knocked down the second to increase
the lead to 84-81.Shardae Williams made a free-throw with nine seconds left and
Tillotson was forced to foul. Senior Johnna Flemmons knocked 1-of-2 down to put
Wesleyan ahead by three. Tillotson's desperation three was no good.
Texas
Wesleyan shot 45 percent (33-73) from the floor and 59 percent (17-29) from the
charity stripe. The Lady Rams also shot 15 percent (2-7) from the three-point
line.
Huston-Tillotson shot 50 percent (30-60)
from the field and 60 percent (21-35) from the free-throw line. The Lady Rams
also shot 14 percent (1-7) from behind the arc.
Texas
Wesleyan will be back in action Thursday, when they take on Jarvis Christian in
the conference tournament. The game will tip-off at 7 p.m. at Southwestern Assemblies
of God University in Waxahachie. The Lady Rams split with Jarvis Christian, with
