WAXAHACHIE, Texas - Sophomore
Nastassia Brown tallied 17 points and five rebounds to lead Texas Wesleyan to
a 73-54 victory over Jarvis Christian Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Red
River Athletic Conference Tournament.
"Defensively
in the second half we turned up the intensity," assistant coach Ashanti Nix
said. "In the first half we kept the ball out on the perimeter and didn't
have much of an inside prescence. We did a better job of getting our post players
involved down low. That was definitely the key to the game."
Texas
Wesleyan (22-9) owned the boards in the first half, outrebounding the Lady Bulldogs,
27-21. Senior Kashae Townsend led the way for the Lady Rams in the first half,
tallying eight points and five rebounds in the first frame.
Jarvis
Christian (13-17) stayed in the game with the help of 10 points from both Jennifer
Crutcher and Sheree Smiling.
In the second
half, Brown took over, scoring 13 of her 17 points down the stretch. Townsend
finished the game with 12 points and eight rebounds. The Lady Rams forced Jarvis
Christian into 30 turnovers.
Texas Wesleyan
shot 41 percent (28-69) from the floor and 54 percent (15-28) from the charity
stripe. The Lady Rams also shot 13 percent (2-15) from the three-point line. Jarvis
Christian shot 32 percent (17-53) from the field and 67 percent (16-24) from the
free-throw line. The Lady Bulldogs also shot 40 percent (4-10) from behind the
arc.
Texas Wesleyan will be back in action
Friday, when they take on Langston in the semifinals of the RRAC tournament. The
game will tip-off at 7 p.m. at Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie.
