WAXAHACHIE, Texas - The
Texas Wesleyan men's basketball team fell to #20 Langston, 66-55, Friday in the
semifinals of the Red River Athletic Conference tournament.
Langston
(24-8) opened the game on a 13-3 run in the first five minutes of the game. Quentin
Beaty led the way with four points during the stretch. The Rams turned the ball
over four times during the run and their shots were not falling, going 1-for-5
in the early going.
Texas Wesleyan (20-12)
canned two three pointers the next two trips down the floor to cut the lead to
15-9, with 14:19 remaining in the first half.
The
Lions answered with a 23-18 run the rest of the first half, led by John Holliman's
three treys. Steven Alexander tallied eight points in the first half. Junior Scott
Reasoner led the Rams with seven first-half points.
In
the second half, the Rams came out firing as junior Khayri McKinney hit for eight
points in the first six minutes of the half to help cut the lead to 43-36, with
13:24 remaining. Junior Ben Hunt helped the cause by knocking down two buckets
during the stretch.
Two free throws by Alexander
pushed the Lion lead up to 13, with 9:19 remaining, but the Rams would not give
up, going on a 12-4 run over the next four minutes. Senior Tommy Johnson tallied
five points during the run and got the Rams going.
Langston,
however, finished the game on a 1-5 run down the stretch to knock the Rams out
of tourney competition. Ryan Davis and Alexander both went 3-of-4 from the charity
stripe in the final two minutes to ice the game.
McKinney
led the Rams with 14 points and added three assists, while Hunt finished with
10 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Reasoner added nine points and seven
rebounds.
Alexander led the Lions with 17
points, nine rebounds and five assists, while Keenanlan Clemmons chipped in with
12 points and nine rebounds off of the bench.
Texas
Wesleyan shot 37 percent (19-52) from the floor and 73 percent (11-15) from the
charity stripe. The Rams also shot 26 percent (6-23) from the three-point line.
Langston
shot 42 percent (20-48) from the field and 71 percent (19-27) from the free-throw
line. The Lions also shot 37 percent (7-19) from behind the arc.
Texas
