CROWLEY,
Texas - Junior Marie Stone tossed a one-hitter in the Lady Rams' opening-game
2-0 victory and she hit a game-winning three-run home run to give Wesleyan a 4-2
victory in the second game.
Texas
Wesleyan (9-4, 2-0 RRAC) opened the scoring in the first inning as third baseman
Ariel Raley laced a two-triple. Stone followed with an RBI-double that scored
Raley and put the Lady Rams up, 1-0. Centerfielder Danah Merck ripped a single
up the middle to score Stone and cap off Wesleyan's scoring.
From
there, Stone went to work on UT-Permian Basin's batters. The Pittsburg, Texas
native, kept the Lady Falcon hitters off balance all day. She took a perfect game
into the seventh inning. The first batter of the inning laced a single up the
middle to break up the perfect game. Stone finished the one-hit shutout with a
career-high 14 strikeouts in seven innings of work.
In
the second game, UT-Permian Basin got on the board with two runs.
Down,
2-1, in the seventh inning, the Lady Rams mounted their comeback. Pitcher Devin
Blew led off the inning with a single to left field. After shortstop Vanessa Urteaga
struck out and catcher Tara Sharp reached on a fielder's choice that forced Blew
out at second base, Raley laced a single through the left side. That set the stage
for Stone as she launched the game-winning home run to right-center field to give
the Lady Rams the victory.
Blew picked up
the victory for Wesleyan in the second game, allowing two runs on six hits, while
walking three and striking out six batters in her complete-game victory.
The
Lady Rams will be back in action Sunday when they host Trinity University. The
doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at Sycamore Park.
