FORT
WORTH, Texas - Texas Wesleyan scored two runs in its final at-bat to win in
its double-header sweep of Texas College Wednesday afternoon at Sycamore Park
in Red River Athletic Conference action. The Lady Rams defeated Texas College,
7-6 in the opening game and finished off the sweep with an 8-3 victory in the
second game.
Texas
College opened the scoring in the first game, pushing across three runs in the
first inning. The Lady Steers had Wesleyan's help as they committed three errors
during the inning that led two of the runs being unearned.
Texas
Wesleyan (21-12, 7-3 RRAC) fought back scoring three runs in the bottom of the
first inning. Rightfielder Tara Sharp and designated player Marie Stone both reached
base with a walk. Catcher Rachel Hampton then crushed a Lady Steer's pitch deep
over the left field wall to knot the score, 3-3.
After
both teams traded runs over the next few innings, the Lady Rams entered the bottom
of the seventh inning, down 6-5.
Third baseman
Ariel Raley led off the inning with a double to left field. Shortstop Vanessa
Urteaga walked and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. After Raley was gunned
out at the plate on a fielder's choice by centerfielder Stacy Fritz, Sharp walked
to load the bases. Second baseman Jessica Bancroft delivered once again, lacing
a single through the left side to score Fritz and Urteaga and give the Lady Rams
the victory.
Junior Devin Blew (7-4) picked
up the victory allowing four earned runs on nine hits while striking out seven
hitters.
In the second game, the Lady Steers,
again started off strong, scoring two runs in the first inning off of Wesleyan
starting pitcher Rachel Lamont.
The Lady
Rams cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first inning as Sharp led off the
inning with home run to left field.
The Lady
Steers registered another run in the fourth inning, but Texas Wesleyan scored
three runs in the fourth inning and four runs in the fifth inning to complete
the doubleheader sweep.
Lamont (5-3) notched
the victory allowing two runs on six hits while walking seven and striking out
nine batters.
Texas Wesleyan will be back
in action Friday when they travel to take on conference-rival College of the Southwest.
