2005 Red River Athletic Conference Team

 
    





      DALLAS, Texas - Eight members of the Texas Wesleyan baseball team were named to the 2005 Red River Athletic all-conference team Monday morning. The team was voted on by coaches within the conference. Juniors Zach Archer and Jason Hopson, along with freshman Josh Vander Hey were named to the first-team. Seniors Anthony Bolivar and Mark Smajstrla, along with junior Travis Clifford and Shea Harrison were named to the second team. Sophomore Jason Diaz was also named to the second team.

     Archer, an outfielder from Fort Worth, Texas, led the Rams in hitting this season with a .411 batting average. The right-hander also drove in 29 runs on 60 hits in 146 at-bats. He also led the team with 13 hit-by-pitches and broke the school record for sacrifice flies with eight.

     Hopson, a right-handed pitcher from Fort Worth, Texas, led the Rams with a 3.53 earned-run average in 79.0 innings of work. He was second on the team with 60 strikeouts and compiled a 6-4 record on the mound.

     Vander Hey, a catcher from Cypress, Texas, finished second on the team with a .390 batting average. He tallied 57 hits, with 21 of them being doubles, and three home runs in 146 at-bats. The redshirt freshman was second on the team with 29 walks and a .610 slugging percentage.

     Bolivar, a second baseman from Arlington, Texas, finished the season with a .322 batting average. The senior registered 23 RBI on 48 hits in 149 at-bats. He also finished second on the team with 124 assists. The senior finishes his career with 386 assists, which breaks the school record that was held by Michael Hall who registered 291 assists from 1999-2001.

     Smajstrla, an outfielder from Burleson, Texas, was third on the team with a .387 batting average. The lefty registered 30 RBI on 63 hits in 163 at-bats. His 12 doubles were good enough for third on the team, while his five triples tied him for the team lead. Smajstrla also went 1-2 on the mound in nine innings pitched.

     Clifford, a first baseman from Grand Saline, Texas, led the Rams with 12 home runs and 60 RBI in 202 at-bats. The big right-hander also led the team with 74 hits and a school record 23 doubles. He also registered a .658 slugging percentage and was second on the team with 39 runs scored.

     Harrison, a pitcher from Arlington, Texas, led the rams with a 9-2 record on the mound. He was also second in earned-run average at 3.86. The junior lefthander piled up 76 strikeouts and had only 13 walks in 72.1 innings of work. His career record now stands at 19-8.

     Diaz, a utility player from Fort Worth, Texas, registered a .364 batting average with a team-best 37 walks. The lefthander appeared in games at eight different positions this season. He was second on the team with a .481 on-base percentage. Diaz was also 15-for-21 in the stolen base department during the year.

     Texas Wesleyan ends its season with a 34-26 record. The season included a 13-2 record in the Red River Athletic Conference, which was good enough for the North Division championship. The Rams set school records for batting average (.347), on-base percentage (.425) and triple (23).
