The 2001-2002 year saw the basketball team
reach the 20 win plateau for the first time since the early 1980s
at Texas Wesleyan. The team finished the year at 20-9, which
included a USCAA Elite Eight appearance in Detroit at the end of
the season. Todd Chappell was voted first team All American, and
Brian Fulton, Chad Crenshaw and Shawn Ashworth also received All
American honorable mention recognition. This core group of young
men had been together for several years and have been the
cornerstone of the resurgence of the basketball program.
Highlights of the season included victories
over foes such as Mary Hardin-Baylor, Austin College, Southwest
Assembly, Howard Payne, and St. Gregorys, among others.
The Rams will lose to graduation Chad Crenshaw
(3 year letterman), Todd Chappell (4 year letterman) and Brian
Fulton (3 year letterman). These young men go out with the honor
of being the most successful group of Texas Wesleyan Basketball
players in many many years. They have indeed left a legacy of
excellence for future teams to strive for. |
