The Texas Wesleyan volleyball team opened the
season with a 2-2 performance at the 2002 Coca-Cola Classic
tournament hosted by Wayland Baptist University over Labor Day
weekend. The Rams, with three true freshmen and two sophomores
among the starting six, lost both matches on Friday, before
rebounding on Saturday to even their record.
In their first match of the season, the Rams
fell to UT-Permian Basin, 30-10, 30-26, 30-24. In the second, they
lost to Lubbock Christian, 30-15, 30-14, 30-26. Saturdays
turnaround began against host Wayland Baptist. After losing the
first game 23-30, the Rams reeled off three straight (30-21,
30-24, 30-24) to win their first match of the year. They also
defeated Red River Conference rival Huston-Tillotson (30-21,
30-16, 30-20).
Senior outside hitter Leighann Krey and
sophomore setter Cortney Johansen of Texas Wesleyan were named to
the all-tournament team.
