In Wesleyans first-ever Red River
Conference match, the Lady Rams volleyball team overpowered the
Texas College Lady Steers, winning 3-0 in front of a home crowd of
over 200 people. The match, also Wesleyans home opener, was
never seriously in doubt.
Game one began with a service error by each
team, tying the score at one. Wesleyan senior Leighann Krey then
ripped three consecutive kills (plus two more in the next four
points) as the Lady Rams pulled away. Sophomore Jocelyn Gaudi
provided the exclamation point with a service ace to win the game
30-11.
Texas College began game the next game with two
quick aces, but committed errors on the next three points to hand
Wesleyan a 3-2 lead. Wesleyan won 10 of the next 15 points and
eventually won the game 30-17.
Wesleyan jumped to 14-6 lead in game three, but
the Lady Steers fought to get within 5 at 21-16. That was as close
as they would come. A powerful crosscourt smash by Krey set the
tone for the remainder of the game, as Wesleyan won 9 of the next
12 points to close out the game 30-19.
Krey led the Rams with 14 kills and Cortney
Johansen produced 24 assists and 4 aces. Allyson Gaudi led the
team with 13 digs, while Jocelyn Gaudi led with 5 aces and added 4
digs. Katherine Williams and Nicky Davis tallied 4 kills apiece,
and Valen Little had 4 digs.
