FORT WORTH, Texas In a rescheduled match
that was supposed to have been played earlier in the season in
Hawkins, Texas, the Lady Ram volleyball team swept Jarvis
Christian College in three games this afternoon at home, 30-14,
30-23, 30-17. The Lady Rams, who last week clinched the top-seed
in the Western Division of the Conference playoffs, easily handled
the Lady Bulldogs with a total of 48 kills and a .363 hitting
percentage.
Despite Wesleyans eventual dominance in
the final statistics, though, it was Jarvis Christian that
sprinted out of the blocks in the first two games.
In game one, the Lady Bulldogs held a 9-5
advantage before a side out gave the serve to sophomore Katherine
Williams. The Lady Rams then scored six consecutive points,
including Williams 12th ace of the season, to jump in front
12-9. Wesleyan then cruised to the game one victory, scoring 18 of
the next 23 points.
In the second game, the two teams traded side
outs to build the score up to a 9-9 tie. Wesleyan then pulled
ahead 12-9 behind the service of Rachel Loftin, before Jarvis
Christian rallied to tie the score at 14. Leighann Krey then took
over as the Lady Rams jumped back in front, this time to stay, at
18-14. Despite a late spurt by the Lady Bulldogs, Wesleyan took
the second game 30-23.
The third game began as the first two should
have with Wesleyan taking an immediate lead and putting the
game away early. Rachel Loftin served the Lady Rams to a 4-0 lead.
After two side outs, Cortney Johansen bumped that lead up to 7-1,
adding her 42nd ace of the season. Aside from two brief offensive
spurts for Jarvis Christian, the rest of the final game followed
suit. Wesleyan won a few points, gave up a side out, got the serve
back, and scored a few more. They eventually won the game by a
score of 30-17.
Leighann Krey led the squad with 14 kills and
14 digs and was second with 4 blocks. Rachel Loftin led with 5
blocks and added 11 kills, and Cortney Johansen tossed up 46
assists. Katherine Williams had 7 kills, 12 digs, and 4 aces,
while Susan Taylor had 14 digs. Tiffany Porterfield and Nicky
Davis also had 7 kills each.
The Lady Bulldogs were led by Tia Jordan with 6
kills and 14 digs, and Danielle Price with 5 kills and 17 digs.
The win extends the Lady Rams winning
streak to six matches, and moves their record to 19-10 overall and
12-3 in conference. They play the final match of the regular
season against Southwestern Assemblies of God University at home
on Tuesday. The match begins at 7:00 PM. |
