DALLAS, Texas - Fresh off their victory over
Jarvis Christian on Saturday afternoon, the Texas Wesleyan womens
basketball team traveled to a tournament on the campus of the
University of Dallas on Sunday to face Millsaps College, an NCAA
D-III school from Jackson, Mississippi. Despite starting the game
with the intensity they showed the day before, the Lady Rams
ultimately couldnt match the perimeter shooting of the Lady
Majors, and fell 66-59.
The Lady Rams opened the game with a 9-2 run,
capped by Shayla Colemans three-pointer two minutes into the
contest. The lead wouldnt last long, though, as Millsaps
chipped away over the next few minutes. Juliana Wallace hit three
field goals and a free throw to lead the charge, and the Lady
Majors tied the score at 14 with just under 13 minutes remaining
in the half.
With 11:54 on the clock, Wallace hit another
inside shot to give Millsaps the lead, and for the next four
minutes, both teams battled to keep the score tight. The final
eight minutes of the half, though, would not go Wesleyans
way. Ashley Walkers jumper with 8:13 remaining narrowed
Millsaps lead to two points, but it was as close as the Lady
Rams would be for the rest of the afternoon. The Lady Majors
closed out the first period with a 12-2 run, taking a 36-24 lead
into the break.
Millsaps opened the second frame by stretching
their lead out to 15 on a three-pointer by Jillian Compton. Both
teams saw limited scoring for the next five minutes, after which
the lead was still well into double figures at 14 points.
Coleman, Kimberly Cooper, and Ashley Walker
then combined to score seven consecutive points over a two minute
stretch, bringing Wesleyan to within seven points at 46-39, but
the Lady Majors were too accurate from outside to allow the Lady
Rams back into the game. Becky McDole, Martha McDaniel, and Greer
all connected from 15 to 20 feet to counter Lady Ram baskets by
Jashana Pitt, Stephanie Reder and Shawndrika Courtney, and the
lead was eight as the clock rolled under a minute.
Valen Littles three-pointer with 45
seconds remaining cut the lead to five, but Wesleyan still had to
foul to have a chance, and the Lady Majors shot well enough from
the line to keep the game out of reach. Compton closed out the
scoring on a pair of free throws with three seconds remaining.
For the second straight game, Coleman the Lady
Rams in scoring, posting 11 points in 32 minutes of play. Courtney
also reached double figures, scoring ten. She added four rebounds.
Ashley Walker scored nine points with six rebounds, and Kimberly
Cooper scored six with seven boards. Other Lady Rams scoring in
the game were Stephanie Reder (6), Kori Yates (5), Naomi Vann (5),
Jashana Pitt (4), and Valen Little (3).
The Lady Rams now stand at 5-5 on the year
overall, and remain 1-2 in RRAC play. The team will take a
two-week break for the holidays, returning to action on January 2
to face Schreiner University in the Sid Richardson Gymnasium.
