FORT WORTH, Texas Corey Stansell, a
senior at Weatherford High School, has signed a national letter of
intent to play baseball at Texas Wesleyan University next season,
announced head coach Mike Jeffcoat on Friday.
Stansell, a 6-1 shortstop, batted
.365 with 1 home run and 14 runs batted in for the Kangaroos as a
junior last season, and was named to the all-district first team.
He also stole 16 bases without being caught.
Hes a great middle
infielder, said Weatherford head coach Lew Prestidge. Hes
quick, with great hands, and can handle the bat.
Jeffcoat agreed. Corey has the
skills to step in and compete for a middle infielders
position right away. Hes got good range, soft hands, and a
strong arm, and thats what its all about defensively.
Hes going to be an excellent addition to the Wesleyan
family, both on and off the field.
A two-sport star, Stansell was also named to
the all-district football first-team as a wide receiver and
received all-state honorable mention as a punter. Academically, he
ranks in the top 20 % of his high school class.
Hes a quality young man
who excels on the field and in the classroom, said
Prestidge. Hes always wanted to go on and play at the
next level, and everyone here is excited that hes getting
that opportunity. We know hes going to be successful.
