MUSKOGEE, Oklahoma - Two ten-point Lady Warrior
scoring bursts in the second half make the difference, as Bacone
hands the Lady Rams their seventh straight loss, 73-50.
After a back and forth beginning which saw five
lead changes and seven ties in the first 12 minutes of action, the
Lady Rams built up a seven-point lead on a pair of buckets by
Shawndrika Courtney and Ashley Walker, plus a three-pointer by
Kori Yates. Wesleyan only held that lead until the final minute of
the half, though, as Stephanie Russell buried two late three-point
shots giving Bacone a 31-27 halftime advantage.
Yates opened the second frame with a three, and
Stephanie Reder followed with a two-pointer to give the Lady Rams
a brief lead, but Russell and Ashleigh Braziel connected on
back-to-back three-pointers, and the Lady Warriors were back on
top to stay with 13:34 remaining. Tesla Morris free throw at
the 11:38 mark put Bacone up 37-34, and ignited a 10-0 run over
the next 1:30 that extended the lead to 12 points.
Wesleyan would try to fight back, though, as
Ertasha Jackson and Kim Cooper combined to cut the lead to seven,
but the Lady Warriors would build it back up to 11 with 6:17
remaining. Becky Bakers lay-up with exactly six minutes
remaining sparked another 10-0 run for Bacone - this one draining
nearly three minutes off the clock - which extended the lead to
21, effectively ending the game with three minutes and change
remaining. A pair of Candiace Holloway free throws capped the
scoring, giving the Lady Warriors a 23-point win.
Bacones Russell led all scorers with 21
points on eight of 16 shooting, including four of ten from long
range. Braziel finished with 14, and Baker scored nine with a
team-high ten rebounds.
Reder hit five of eight attempts, including two
of four from beyond the arc, to lead the Lady Rams with 13 points.
Yates also shot well from long range, connecting on three of five
to finish with 11, the first time this season she has reached
double figures.
Walker led all players with 11 rebounds, and
Courtney finished with ten boards and nine points.
The Lady Rams fall to 7-12 for the year, 1-8 in
Red River Conference play.
They travel to Marshall on Thursday to face
Wiley College, then return home on Saturday to square off against
Southwestern Assemblies of God University for the second time this
season. In the first match, on December 12, the Lady Lions took a
71-70 victory over Wesleyan on a last second shot. The rematch
tips off at 5:30 PM in the Sid Richardson Gymnasium.
