MARSHALL, Texas After falling behind by
ten points at halftime, the Lady Rams tried to fight back and end
their seven-game losing streak, but came up just short, falling to
Wiley College 65-59 on Thursday night.
Wesleyan struggled from the field in the first
half, connecting on just nine of 29 shots for a shooting
percentage of .310. They did, however, shoot 60 percent (three of
five) from three-point range in the half. The Lady Wildcats made
15 of 32 shots in the frame, though only one three-pointer, to
take a 33-23 lead into the break.
The Lady Rams found their shooting touch in the
second half, hitting 11 of 18 shots (61 percent) and three of four
three-pointers to get back into the game. The also spent much of
the half at the line - managing 18 attempts but could only
muster 11 free throw points. Wiley connected on 13 of 25 shots (52
percent) in the half, and hit six of eight free throws to hang on
for a six point victory.
As a team, Wiley out shot Wesleyan 49 percent
to 46 percent from the floor, but the Lady Rams hit 67 percent of
their three-pointers, compared to Wileys 25 percent. The big
difference in the game was rebounding, as Wileys 34-20
advantage off the glass helped them to several second chance
points.
Wileys Amber Boykins led all players with
19 points, connecting on nine of 12 shots from the floor. April
Tomkins posted a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 14
rebounds, and Tamuka Beamen also chipped in 15 points for the Lady
Wildcats.
For Wesleyan, Shawndrika Courtney led with 14
points on six if 11 shooting. She also led in rebounds with six.
Valen Little reached double figures for the first time this season
with 12 points, and was perfect in three attempts from long range.
Shayla Coleman scored 11, marking the ninth time in the last 11
games she has reached double figures in scoring. Kori Yates and
Kim Cooper each added seven points.
The loss drops the Lady Rams to 7-13 overall
and 1-9 in Red River Conference play. They return home to face
Southwestern Assemblies of God University on Saturday evening at
5:30 in the Sid Richardson gymnasium. On December 12, the Lady
Rams lost to the Lady Lions in Waxahachie on a last-second shot. |
