DALLAS, Texas - Shawndrika Courtney and Shayla
Coleman combined for 45 points, but it wasnt nearly enough.
The Lady Rams surrendered a 12-0 run midway through the first half
to fall behind, then continued to turn the ball over, allowing the
Lady Tigers to put the game well out of reach. A brief run at the
end of the contest narrowed the gap a little, but the Lady Rams
were too far behind, ultimately losing 94-68 at Paul Quinn
University in Dallas.
Wesleyan managed to grab an early lead, thanks
to a pair of Kim Cooper buckets in the first 40 seconds of the
game. The Lady Tigers fought back over the next few minutes,
though, until Hilary Faubles three-pointer at the 16:20 mark
knotted the score at eight. Tracie Silcotts free throws
nearly two minutes later gave Paul Quinn their first lead of the
night, and the Lady Tigers didnt look back.
Three minutes later, Paul Quinns lead was
out to eight points. Shayla Coleman scored twice to cut the lead
to four, but the Lady Tigers scored the next 12 points to jump out
to a 33-17 lead with four minutes to play in the half. They
outscored Wesleyan 11-8 over the remaining minutes, and took a
44-25 lead into the break.
Stephanie Reder began the scoring in the second
frame for Wesleyan, knocking down her only three-point attempt of
the night at 19:05 to cut the lead to 16. After five minutes of
back and forth play, Natasha Williams three-point play
followed by a Fauble jumper kicked the lead out to 20. Coleman
connected on a three-pointer for Wesleyan, but the Lady Tigers
ripped off another 12-0 run, taking a 29-point lead as the clock
hit 10:00.
Paul Quinn extended that lead as high as 34,
but the Lady Rams managed a 12-2 run in the final six minutes to
cut that lead down to 26 as the final buzzer sounded.
Hilary Fauble led all players with 25 points on
nine of 21 shooting, and Katrina Simpson hit ten of 14 shots to
score 20. Jasmine Dowden scored 17, and she and Simpson each
pulled down nine rebounds. Natasha Williams led the Lady Tigers
with 12 boards.
Shawndrika Courtney led Wesleyan with 23
points, hitting seven of 12 attempts from the floor. Shayla
Coleman scored 22 and had a team-high ten rebounds - her second
straight double-double after a 23-point, 14 rebound effort against
SAGU on Saturday night. Kori Yates, Kim Cooper and Valen Little
each scored six point for the Lady Rams, and Stephanie Reder added
another five.
Wesleyan drops to 8-14 on the season, and 2-10
in conference play. They face LeTourneau University, a
non-conference opponent, on Wednesday evening in Longview, before
returning home on Saturday to face Jarvis Christian College.
