Coleman Named Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week
February 27, 2003

FORT WORTH, Texas – Texas Wesleyan junior Shayla Coleman was honored on Tuesday as the Red River Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for February 17-23. Coleman, a guard for the Lady Rams, averaged 37.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in two games this past week.

On Saturday, Coleman blistered Huston-Tillotson College in Austin with 42 points, seven rebounds, four assists, one block, and six steals. She connected on 12 of 21 attempts, including three of five three-pointers, and hit all 15 of her free throw attempts to help the Lady Rams edge Huston-Tillotson in overtime, 97-93.

The previous Monday, Coleman made 11 of 18 field goal attempts, including three for three from beyond the arc, to post 33 points in a loss at Texas College in Tyler. She connected on eight of nine free throw attempts and added four rebounds.

The 2002-2003 season is Coleman’s first at Texas Wesleyan. The San Antonio native transferred this summer from the University of Houston, where she did not play basketball. As a star at San Antonio-Marshall High School, Coleman was named to the all-district first team and all-region second-team following her senior season.

This season for Wesleyan, Coleman leads the team in scoring at 13.8 points per game. She also leads in free throw shooting percentage (.800), three-point shooting percentage (.418), and is tied for the lead in total steals (49). She currently ranks 12th in the conference in scoring, fourth in free throw accuracy, and second in three-point accuracy.
