Shayla Coleman was honored on Tuesday as the Red River Athletic
Conference Womens Basketball Player of the Week for February
17-23. Coleman, a guard for the Lady Rams, averaged 37.5 points
and 5.5 rebounds in two games this past week.
On Saturday, Coleman blistered Huston-Tillotson
College in Austin with 42 points, seven rebounds, four assists,
one block, and six steals. She connected on 12 of 21 attempts,
including three of five three-pointers, and hit all 15 of her free
throw attempts to help the Lady Rams edge Huston-Tillotson in
overtime, 97-93.
The previous Monday, Coleman made 11 of 18
field goal attempts, including three for three from beyond the
arc, to post 33 points in a loss at Texas College in Tyler. She
connected on eight of nine free throw attempts and added four
rebounds.
The 2002-2003 season is Colemans first at
Texas Wesleyan. The San Antonio native transferred this summer
from the University of Houston, where she did not play basketball.
As a star at San Antonio-Marshall High School, Coleman was named
to the all-district first team and all-region second-team
following her senior season.
This season for Wesleyan, Coleman leads the
team in scoring at 13.8 points per game. She also leads in free
throw shooting percentage (.800), three-point shooting percentage
(.418), and is tied for the lead in total steals (49). She
currently ranks 12th in the conference in scoring, fourth in free
throw accuracy, and second in three-point accuracy.
