Lady Rams Drop Season Finale to Bacone
March 3, 2003

Complete Box Score

FORT WORTH, Texas - The Lady Rams grabbed an early lead, but couldn’t keep the momentum going. A pair of 6-0 runs in the first half put the Lady Warriors up by eight, and they never let it get below four the rest of the night, winning the last regular season game of the year 73-56 in the Sid Richardson Gymnasium on Monday night.

Shawndrika Courtney got Wesleyan on the board early, connecting on a lay-up 15 seconds in. Her second basket four minutes later put the Rams on top 8-4, but Bacone came back to tie the score on a pair of easy lay-ups. The teams battled evenly for the next few minutes, until a 6-0 run by the Lady Warriors gave them a 20-15 lead with 9:27 left in the half.

The Lady Rams fought back to get within two at 26-24 with five minutes on the clock, but a second 6-0 run by Bacone opened up an eight-point lead, which they held on to until halftime, leading 39-31.

As the second half began, it was again Courtney who opened up the scoring, this time on a pair of free throws to cut the Lady Rams’ deficit to six. The Lady Warriors came back with a pair of buckets, though, to extend the lead to ten, then pushed it to 11 on a Kelly Sisney jumper with 15:43 remaining.

Twenty seconds later, Courtney hit another bucket from the paint, then after a Shayla Coleman jumper, connected on a three-point play to get the Lady Rams back to within four at 49-45 with 13 minutes to play. The momentum was short-lived, though, as Bacone followed with a 10-0 run, building up a 59-45 lead that put the game away.

The Lady Rams came back with a pair of buckets, but the Lady Warriors responded to every Wesleyan advance, keeping the lead safely in double-digits, and even adding to it late in the game - scoring four points in the final minute to increase the final margin to 17, at 73-56.

Two Lady Warriors recorded double-double in the game. Ivy finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Campbell tallied 15 points and 18 boards. Stephanie Russell scored 11 for Bacone, and Sisney and Kelly Quillman each scored eight with four steals. The Warriors shot 36 percent in the game, hitting 28 of 77 attempts from the floor, and out-rebounded Wesleyan 52-47.

Courtney led all players with 18 points on 6 of 11 shooting and six of nine free throws. She also pulled down seven rebounds. Kim Cooper finished with season highs in points and rebounds, recording 12 and 15, respectively. Valen Little scored ten with seven boards, and Coleman finished with eight and six. Kori Yates led the squad with five assists and four steals. Wesleyan shot 30 percent from the floor in the game, hitting 21 of 68 shots.

The Lady Rams finish the regular season with a record of 12-19 overall, 6-14 in Red River Conference play.

Depending on the outcome of Monday night’s Jarvis Christian/UT-Permian Basin game, they will travel to either top-seed Houston Baptist or second-seed Langston on Thursday, March 6.
