FORT WORTH, Texas - The Lady Rams grabbed an
early lead, but couldnt keep the momentum going. A pair of
6-0 runs in the first half put the Lady Warriors up by eight, and
they never let it get below four the rest of the night, winning
the last regular season game of the year 73-56 in the Sid
Richardson Gymnasium on Monday night.
Shawndrika Courtney got Wesleyan on the board
early, connecting on a lay-up 15 seconds in. Her second basket
four minutes later put the Rams on top 8-4, but Bacone came back
to tie the score on a pair of easy lay-ups. The teams battled
evenly for the next few minutes, until a 6-0 run by the Lady
Warriors gave them a 20-15 lead with 9:27 left in the half.
The Lady Rams fought back to get within two at
26-24 with five minutes on the clock, but a second 6-0 run by
Bacone opened up an eight-point lead, which they held on to until
halftime, leading 39-31.
As the second half began, it was again Courtney
who opened up the scoring, this time on a pair of free throws to
cut the Lady Rams deficit to six. The Lady Warriors came
back with a pair of buckets, though, to extend the lead to ten,
then pushed it to 11 on a Kelly Sisney jumper with 15:43
remaining.
Twenty seconds later, Courtney hit another
bucket from the paint, then after a Shayla Coleman jumper,
connected on a three-point play to get the Lady Rams back to
within four at 49-45 with 13 minutes to play. The momentum was
short-lived, though, as Bacone followed with a 10-0 run, building
up a 59-45 lead that put the game away.
The Lady Rams came back with a pair of buckets,
but the Lady Warriors responded to every Wesleyan advance, keeping
the lead safely in double-digits, and even adding to it late in
the game - scoring four points in the final minute to increase the
final margin to 17, at 73-56.
Two Lady Warriors recorded double-double in the
game. Ivy finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Campbell
tallied 15 points and 18 boards. Stephanie Russell scored 11 for
Bacone, and Sisney and Kelly Quillman each scored eight with four
steals. The Warriors shot 36 percent in the game, hitting 28 of 77
attempts from the floor, and out-rebounded Wesleyan 52-47.
Courtney led all players with 18 points on 6 of
11 shooting and six of nine free throws. She also pulled down
seven rebounds. Kim Cooper finished with season highs in points
and rebounds, recording 12 and 15, respectively. Valen Little
scored ten with seven boards, and Coleman finished with eight and
six. Kori Yates led the squad with five assists and four steals.
Wesleyan shot 30 percent from the floor in the game, hitting 21 of
68 shots.
The Lady Rams finish the regular season with a
record of 12-19 overall, 6-14 in Red River Conference play.
Depending on the outcome of Monday nights
Jarvis Christian/UT-Permian Basin game, they will travel to either
top-seed Houston Baptist or second-seed Langston on Thursday,
March 6.
