Three Lady Rams Grab Conference Honors
March 7, 2003

FORT WORTH, Texas – One day after their season came to an end in the play-offs, a trio of Lady Rams received honors for their play during the regular season. The conference coaches voted Ashley Walker, Shayla Coleman, and Shawndrika Courtney to the 2002-2003 Red River Conference honorable mention all-conference team.

Ashley WalkerWalker, a junior post from Bryan, Texas, was honored despite missing the last 12 games of the season due to injury. She finished third on the team at 12.1 points per game, and led the Lady Rams with 7.3 rebounds per contest. Those averages were good for 19th and 8th, respectively, in the final conference standings. She also recorded 49 steals, and her average of 2.68 steals per game ranked 6th in conference. An outstanding interior player, Ashley tied for the team high with five double-doubles on the season, despite playing in only 19 games.

Shayla ColemanColeman, a junior guard from San Antonio, Texas, came on strong at the end of the season to lead the Lady Rams in scoring at 14.7 points per game. She averaged 17.4 points per game after New Year’s Day, and scored in double figures 16 times in her last 20 games. On February 17, she scored an amazing 33 points against Texas College, then followed that up with a season-high 42 against Huston-Tillotson five days later, earning Red River Conference Player of the Week honors for that achievement. Shayla finished 7th in the conference in scoring, 2nd in three-point accuracy, and 2nd in free throw percentage. She also co-led the Lady Rams by recording five double-doubles on the season.

Shawndrika CourtneyCourtney, a true freshman from Euless, Texas, stepped in and contributed immediately. Despite having never played at the college level before, she scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in her first game, recording the Lady Rams’ first double-double of the season. She did it again three games later, and would finish with three for the year. She finished second on the team in scoring at 13.3 points per game and second in rebounding with 6.5 per contest. Both of those totals were good for 13th in the conference, and were second among conference freshmen. Shawndrika also led the team with a .500 shooting percentage (9th in conference) and 31 blocked shots (#rd in conference).
