FORT WORTH, Texas Monica Barrilleaux
picked up this season right where she left off last year
winning honors for her play on the softball diamond. The
outfielder/pitcher, who was named to the 2002 USCAA All-American
squad after the Lady Rams placed fourth in the national
tournament, was honored by the Red River Conference today as the
first Player of the Week for the 2003 season.
Barrilleaux, a senior from Duncanville, Texas,
smoked opponents pitching for a .429 average during six
games last week, collecting nine hits in 21 at bats. She smacked
three doubles and a triple on route to an impressive .667 slugging
percentage, scored five times and knocked in three runs during the
week.
Most of her damage came in one game against
Hill College. On Sunday afternoon, Barrilleaux went 4-4, including
a double and a triple, knocking in one run and scoring three as
Wesleyan won 5-4.
Barrilleaux currently leads the conference in
runs scored with 13, is tied for second with 15 hits, and ranks
third in the conference with a .441 batting average. She also
leads the conference with two triples and is tied for first with
four doubles on the year. As a pitcher, she ranks third in the
conference with a 2.27 ERA.
