DALLAS, Texas Texas Wesleyan
signee Scott Sikes shot a final-round 61 en route to winning the
Dallas Junior Golf Championship Tuesday at the Tenison Parks
Highlands course.
Sikes, a recent graduate of Irving MacArthur,
captured the boys open division championship with a 9-under 135
total, besting Plano Wests Jeff Howard by seven shots.
I was really nervous early on,
Sikes said. Then I ate some peanut butter crackers, and that
calmed my stomach and my nerves.
He finished the day with 35-foot birdie put on
the 18th green to finish 11-under par. The course record is 65,
but because Sikes was playing from the standard junior tees, the
second -longest, his score does not count as a record.
This is an extraordinary
achievement for any individual, Texas Wesleyan head golf
coach Kevin Millikan said. We are extremely excited about
Scott joining our team next year.
According to the American Junior Golf
Association record book, 62 is the lowest 18-hole round (10-under
par), recorded by Stewart Whitt of Athens, Ala., in 2002.
Sikes will begin play this fall for Texas
Wesleyan.
