FT.WORTH, Texas
- The Texas Wesleyan athletic department enjoyed another
successful year as it sent seven of its eight teams to post-season
play. Two of those teams advanced to regional play. The
Rams had 10 first-team, two second-team and seven honorable mention
all-conference selections. Below is a recap of each sport.
Volleyball
The women's volleyball team followed
up their 18-win season from a year ago by posting a 22-12 overall
record and a 14-3 record in the Red River Athletic Conference.
The Lady Rams finished the regular
season on a roll, wining 12 of their last 14 matches. However, their
success did not stop there as they took home second place in the
conference tournament before losing to Lubbock Christian, 3-0 in
the regional semifinals.
"We were a young team last season,"
head coach Rick Johansen said. "Even with our inexperience,
we finished second in conference. I think we have a lot to look
forward to next season."
Senior Leighann Krey and sophomore
Cortney Johansen were both selected first-team all-conference. Johansen
finished the season second in the conference in assists averaging
11.93 per game.
Freshman Rachel Loftin and sophomore
Nicky Davis both earned second-team honors. Loftin was also named
conference freshman of the year, while Davis picked up front-row
specialist of the year honors.
Men's Soccer
The men's soccer team finished the
season with a 6-11 overall record and a 3-4 record in the RRAC.
Freshman defender Eddie Hernandez and senior goalkeeper Josh Gibbs
both were selected honorable mention all-conference. Gibbs ranked
second in the conference in goals against average with a 1.67.
"We had a lot of trouble finishing
games last season so it was really frustrating," head coach
Steve Jones said. "Eight of our 11 losses were by one goal.
We were on the verge of reaching that next level all season. We
return most of our starters next year and I feel that we will be
able to compete for the conference title."
Women's Soccer
The women's soccer team compiled a
9-8 overall record and a 2-3 record in the RRAC. The Lady Rams advanced
to the semifinals of the conference tournament before falling to
eventual conference champion Bacone, 6-0.
Freshman Jessica Carrion was named
first-team all-conference and newcomer of the year. The midfielder
tallied 55 points on 25 goals and five assists.
"All in all, we had a good season,
but you are always looking for ways to improve," head coach
Steve Jones said. "With the recruits we have coming next season
and the starters we have returning, I look for us to be in the mix
for the conference title."
Men's Basketball
The men's basketball team had another
outstanding season finishing with an overall record of 22-12, and
a 13-7 record in the RRAC. The Rams advanced to the semifinals of
the conference tournament before falling to Jarvis Christian, 80-70.
This was the second year in a row they have reached the 20-win plateau.
Junior David Johnson was selected
first-team all-conference and defensive player of the year. The
6-10 center led the conference in block shots with 156. That total
was also good enough to put him amongst the national leaders.
Seniors Aaron Whaley and James Whitfield were both selected honorable
mention all-conference.
"I think our program continued
to make great strides last season," head coach Terry Waldrop
said. "After attending the national tournament and having played
some of the top teams in the country it was very apparent that we
were easily capable of playing at that level. Last season was a
learning experience for our players as we headed into a league we
didn't know much about but we quickly became a power and we see
that increasing as time goes on. With our second consecutive 20-win
season we are looking forward to continuing our journey to the elite
of the NAIA."
Women's Basketball
The women's basketball team finished
the season with an overall record of 12-20 and a 6-14 record in
the RRAC. The Lady Rams reached the quarterfinals of the conference
tournament before falling to Langston, 94-54.
The 12 wins mark an 11-win turnaround
after last season's 1-24 record, and they did all of this without
any seniors.
Juniors Shayla Coleman and Ashley Walker, along with freshman Shawndrika
Courtney, received honorable mention all-conference honors.
"We were a really young team
last season but we progressed well as the season went on,"
head coach Stacy Francis said. "I think we learned a lot from
last season and we are headed in the right direction."
Baseball
After a few early-season struggles,
the baseball team came on strong, winning 19 of its final 20 regular
season games before going 0-2 in the conference tournament, losing
to Houston Baptist, 10-4, and eventual champion Northwood, 6-3.
The Rams ended the season with a 37-22-1 overall record and a 20-10
record in the RRAC.
Freshman pitcher Shea Harrison and
freshman catcher Matt Putnam both were named first-team all-conference.
Freshman reliever Seth Manning was also named the conference relief
pitcher of the year. Harrison and Manning finished the season with
the best earned-run averages in the conference with a 1.83 ERA and
a 2.08 ERA respectively.
"Considering that it was our
first season back at the NAIA level, I was very pleased with how
our team performed," head coach Mike Jeffcoat said. "We
came on strong and gelled as a team towards the end of the season.
Next year we look to make a run at the conference title and advance
deep into the playoffs."
Softball
The softball team finished the season
with an overall record of 18-27 and a 6-10 record in the RRAC. The
Lady Rams advanced to the conference tournament where they went
1-2. They defeated UT-Permian Basin, 4-0, before falling to Houston
Baptist, 10-0, and Bacone, 4-2.
Sophomore Danah Merck was named co-conference
player of the year and first-team all-conference. Joining Merck
on the first-team were sophomore Stephanie Rice and seniors Monica
Barrilleaux and Amanda Kashuba.
"Our schedule last season was
really tough," head coach David Barrientes said. "We have
a lot of recruits coming in next season. Our team will be young
and will have a lot of learning to do."
Golf
The men's golf team came on strong at the
end of the year, qualifying for regionals. The Rams finished fifth
in the tournament.
Junior Ryan Craig led the way for
the Rams, finishing the season with three top-10 finishes and a
victory at the Jet Classic in Wichita, Kan.
"It was great to be back in the
NAIA last season," head coach Kevin Millikan said. "We
did a good job as a team and barely missed out on the national tournament.
Our region is one of the toughest in the country."
