FT. WORTH, Texas Texas Wesleyan golf
newcomer Scott Sikes qualified for the U.S. Amateur, finishing tied
for second at the sectional qualifier in Euless, Texas, at the Texas
Star Golf Club.
Sikes' two-round total of 141 (three under par) advances him to
the 103rd U.S. Amateur at the historic Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont,
Pa., from Aug. 18-24.
"This is a tremendous accomplishment
for Scott," Texas Wesleyan men's golf coach Kevin Millikan
said. "Qualifying for this
event is one of the toughest things to do in golf. He is playing
some really good golf right now
and hopefully he will continue to build off of this when our season
begins."
Sikes, a native of Irving, Texas, finished one shot back of Ryan
Posey of Dallas who fired a two-round total of 140 to earn medalist
honors. Sikes finished tied for second with Pete Pennington of Granbury,
Texas, who also shot a 141.
