COMMERCE, Texas - Texas A&M-Commerce
proved to be too much for the Lady Rams as they downed Texas Wesleyan
30-23, 30-28, 27-30, 30-22, Thursday evening at the A&M-Commerce
Field House.
"We didn't serve receive very well
tonight," head coach Rick Johansen said. "It all starts
with that and if you have problems it is hard to start your offense."
The Lady Rams (2-1) dropped the first two
games to the Lions on the strength of 10 kills from A&M-Commerce's
Amy Wallace.
Texas Wesleyan would battle back taking
game three with junior outside hitter Nicky Davis leading the way
with five kills in the game. The Lady Rams combined for a .364 hitting
percentage.
"When we battled back that third game,
I think we regained our focus," Johansen said. "I think
our intensity was there the entire match, we just made too many
errors."
A&M-Commerce (7-4) settled down to
take the fourth and final game as the Lions posted 18 kills during
that span.
Davis led the Lady Rams with 15 kills and
a .424 hitting percentage. She now is second on the team with 44
kills this season.
"Nicky had a great game," Johansen
said. "She hit the ball well, we just didn't have anyone to
follow her lead.
Sophomore Rachel Loftin and junior Tiffany
Porterfield both finished 13 kills. Junior setter Cortney Johansen
led the team with 43 assists.
Wallace led A&M-Commerce with 22 kills
and added 10 digs. Also posting a double-double was LaTasha Jacobs
who finished with 13 kills and 16 digs. Setter Shannon Robbins dished
out 48 assists and provided the Lions with a team-leading five aces.
"They are a good team," Johansen
said. "They used their height to their advantage. It is hard
to hit against a team that is so tall."
Texas Wesleyan returns to action Friday
against conference-favorite Houston Baptist at 7 p.m. and follows
with a trip to Austin to take on Huston-Tillotson, Saturday, at
1 p.m.
