Texas Wesleyan opens conference play with a 3-0 victory
September 13, 2003

WAXAHACHIE, Texas - Sophomore Nathan Mutchler's goal in the 17th minute would be all Texas Wesleyan would need as they defeated Southwest Assemblies of God, 3-0, Saturday evening in Red River Athletic Conference action.

"Our possession was excellent tonight," head coach Steve Jones said. "We moved the ball around and controlled the tempo of the match."

The Rams (4-1, 1-0 RRAC) began the scoring with Mutchler's goal from 18 yards out.

Sophomore Travis Mauldin added the second goal of the game in the 31st minute on a breakaway, when he beat the keeper one-on-one to give Texas Wesleyan a 2-0, lead.

Freshman Christian Villasenor capped off the scoring in the match in the 81st minute, tapping a one-timer from sophomore Jose Melendez to make the final score, 3-0.

Texas Wesleyan outshot the Lions, 16-5.

"We couldn't put them away until the very end," Jones said. "We still need to work on a lot of things. Especially with stiffer competition to follow."

The Rams will be back in action Wednesday, when they host Oklahoma City at 5 p.m.
