FIRESTONE, Ariz.- In a tournament
that features a predominant field of Division II teams, the Texas
Wesleyan golf team sits in 11th place in the Grand Canyon Classic
at the Estrella Mountain Ranch Golf Club Monday afternoon.
Texas Wesleyan (292-300=592) sits 27 shots
behind tournament leader Calif. State-Bakersfield (286-279=565)
after the first two rounds of play.
"We played pretty good in the first
round, but slumped a little in the afternoon," head coach Kevin
Millikan said. "It's not that we are playing bad, it's just
that the other teams are playing that good."
Freshman Scott Sikes continues to perform
for the Rams, leading the way with a 70-76=146, two-over par to
finish the day tied for 29th. Junior Chris Loftis is tied for 41st
after shooting a 75-73=148, four-over par. Sophomore Reino Deetlefs
and junior Euan McIntosh both finished with a 149, five-over par
to end the day tied for 44th. Junior Justin Ward rounded out the
scoring with a 153, nine-over par.
The first day saw 18 players shoot under
par and four teams fire under-par scores after round two.
"We have to play to our abilities
and come away with something positive during the final round,"
Millikan said. "We need to prove to ourselves that we can finish
a tournament."
The Rams will be back in action for the third and final round Tuesday
morning.
