FORT WORTH, Texas. - Jesus Sanchez'
goal in the 85th minute led Texas A&M-International to a 4-3
victory over Texas Wesleyan Saturday afternoon at Martin Field.
Texas A&M-International (10-3, 4-0
RRAC) took the opening lead as Sanchez scored on a breakaway in
the seventh minute on a breakaway.
The Rams (8-5, 3-1 RRAC) fought back with
two goals of their own. Sophomore Rene Mercado scored on a penalty
kick in the 33rd minute. Freshman Christian Villasenor scored the
second goal off of a header to the front post to put the Rams ahead,
2-1 at the half. Freshman Mark Puente was credited with the assist
on the corner-kick.
In the second half, Texas Wesleyan scored
in the opening minute on a goal by Villasenor to push the lead to
3-1. Puente also assisted on the play.
TAMU-International fought back with a flurry
of shots on goal. They connected on three of them, coming in the
68th minute, 81st minute and Sanchez' game-winner in the 85th minute.
"We played great for the first 60
minutes," head coach Steve Jones said. "We let down the
last 30 minutes and they capitalized on it. It was a hard-fought
match by both teams."
Texas Wesleyan returns to action Wednesday
when they travel to take on conference-foe Bacone College at 4 p.m.
